My Story
As a second-grade teacher in the NYC public school system, my favorite part of the school day was story time.
A read aloud wasn't just another part of the school day. One minute we were sitting in our classroom, the next, we were pirates, princesses, animals, explorers. We were whoever happened to live inside the pages of that day's book.
I loved giving every character a different personality and voice. My students weren't just listening to the story. They were laughing, answering questions, moving and becoming part of it.
Then, on a random Tuesday morning, as I sat in front of my second graders, with a book in my hands, a thought popped into my head....
What if I could do this every day?
That's when I began to fly. And Alexair Dreams was born.
That little Tuesday morning idea eventually became Alexair Dreams.
What started with a book, a classroom and a whole lot of imagination has grown into a company that uses storytelling and theater to inspire, teach and entertain children, families and educators.
Because I've been the teacher in the classroom, I know how powerful it is when a child feels seen, heard and excited to participate.
And today, I get to share that same kind of magic in so many different ways.
* Interactive Storytelling Shows: Where children sing, dance, laugh, imagine and learn their way through stories. Each experience is aligned with learning standards.
* Professional Development: I work with educators, sharing simple theater and performance techniques they can take right back into their classrooms.
* Parent Workshops: I love helping parents discover fun, creative ways to become part of their child's learning journey.
* Children Workshops: Where learning and play come together through storytelling, movement, creativity and imagination.
* Theater Programs: Through theater, children get to practice something even bigger. They're finding their voice, believing in themselves and discovering that they can lead.
I still carry that second-grade teacher with me. I still believe children learn best when they can move, imagine, laugh, create and be themselves.
Every time I watch a child's face light up during a story, I know I made that right decision on that random Tuesday morning.
A Teacher with a Dream
I'm Ria, a lifelong educator, actor, vocalist and storyteller. For more than 30 years, I've had the joy of learning from children, teaching students, performing for children and their families and creating experiences that make learning come alive.
My journey began with a love of children and a deep curiosity about how they learn. I earned my BA in Child Development from Spelman College in Atlanta, Georgia. Later, I received my MA in Reading and Clinical Diagnostic Assessment from Bowling Green State University.
But here's what I've learned along the way. Children don't have to choose between learning and having fun.
I believe something magical happens when we blend the imagination of performance with the power of education. A story can make a child curious. A song can help a lesson stick. Theater can give a quiet child a voice. And a playful learning experience can help a child discover, "Hey I can do this!".
Alexair Dreams is dedicated to supporting the academic, social-emotional and cultural growth of children from nursery school through fifth grade. Leaving plenty of room for imagination, laughter, creativity and joy.
I created Alexair Dreams because I believe children can learn serious things without losing their sense of wonder. I believe something magical happens when we bring the arts into learning. My goal is simple. It's to nurture bright minds and big hearts.
That's My Why
You know what I love about a good story? It makes you want to jump right in! That's exactly how I feel about learning. When education feels like a story, every child becomes the hero. I've seen it happen again and again. Give a child a chance to become a character and suddenly they're completely in it. They're curious. They're excited. They're learning without even realizing it.
That's my why. I want every child to have those moments when their eyes light. Education doesn't have to feel like work all the time. Sometimes, the best way to help a child learn is to invite them into the story, hand them the spotlight and let them discover that they've been the hero all along.
